EXPLORE CORAL BLEACHING
A Global Issue
WHAT IS CORAL BLEACHING?
Coral Bleaching is when important algae gets expelled from coral because water temperatures are to high or there is to much pollution in the water. This causes the coral to become white and while it is not dead, it will die if left untreated. A rise in ocean temperatures occurs when factories release too much carbon-dioxide into the air, it creates a barrier that can trap heat inside of it. This heat eventually warms the ocean by a few degrees and stresses coral.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
LIMIT POLLUTION
Because pollution is one of the main causes of coral bleaching, you can help coral stay healthy by not admitting as much into the air. You can do this by riding a bike or a bus instead of a car, or by using solar panels to get your electricity. This may not sound like a lot but if enough people do it it can make a big difference.
PREVENT RUNOFFF
When there is a lot of runoff water, it can lead into our oceans and pollute them. This is a problem because pollution stresses the coral and can make it bleach. You can stop this runoff by limiting the amount of water that you use as well as planting trees to catch the runoff.
RAISE AWARENESS
The more people that know about coral bleaching, the more people working to stop coral will raise and the more people will tell others about the problems that coral bleaching and pollution are causing. This can cause a large chain reaction of people telling other people, who then tell even more people.
